Our new re-recorded single and video for Jolene drops this Friday, January 17 on all major platforms. Stream the video as it releases at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irlv_UqAwxE

What I love about the original is how textured it is. The intricate guitar picking layers beautifully over the complex lyric of the protagonist pleading with Jolene, a true femme fatale, to stay away from her beloved partner. The song has an energetic, almost frantic feel, and the lyrics perfectly capture that anxiety.

We ended up taking the song in a new direction more fitting for Tears, emphasizing the unsettled, anxious vibes of "Jolene." After some rehearsals, we developed a version that blended dream pop, post-punk, darkwave, and alternative country.

I made some minor changes to Dolly’s lyrics to give the song a modern, inclusive feel, which was also reflected in the video.

The video’s story is something many of us can relate to, of having a new person enter the equation and the anxieties that can sometimes arise from that.

I was adamant about a) making the video reflect the inclusive nature of the modern goth/postpunk scene and b) not ending the video on a sad or self-destructive note.

I wanted to convey a positive message about personal growth and letting go of what isn’t meant to be. Years ago, I dealt with similar feelings in old relationship situation, and I’ve learned and grown a lot since then. My wish is others find hope and growth in the video as well. 🖤

As 2024 comes to a close, we can’t help but reflect on the incredible journey this year has taken us on. From intimate shows in cozy venues to unforgettable nights in cities we’ve grown to love, every performance was made special by you, the faces close to the stage, the voices singing with us, and the energy we felt together.

We’re grateful for every stage we stepped on, every mile we traveled, and every new connection we made along the way. To the venues that hosted us, the bands we shared the stage with, and especially to you, our supporters, thank you for keeping the fire burning. 🌹🖤

In 1996, I wore this red mini skirt and crop top to one of my old band's shows in Atlanta (@darkhorseatlanta). It was a thrift store find that made me feel euphoric and terrified all at once... it was the most femme I had ever presented in public. One of my bandmates was genuinely concerned about my safety, and they weren’t wrong. Being trans in the mid-'90s, especially in the south, was dangerous. But I couldn’t keep pretending anymore.

As we approach 2025, we stand on the edge of a new administration openly hostile to trans rights.

Trans kids have been under attack for years, and now trans people of all ages are at risk of losing what rights we have fought so hard for.

That’s why it’s more important than ever to remain visible, to be steadfast and strong, and to show up as our authentic selves. I’m not the ideal image of a woman, but who is? I’m doing the best I can with what I’ve been given. I am real, and I will never go back to faking it for anyone, least of all for the bible-thumpers.

Do not let fear silence you. ✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿
